The Altay Mountains, reaching up to 4,506 meters in height, are a Central Asian mountain range situated in the border regions of Kazakhstan, Russia (Siberia), Mongolia, and China. The Chinese part is located in the northern part of Xinjiang Province. Known for the beauty of its landscapes and flora (protected area known as the "Golden Mountains") and Altaic culture, the Altay Mountains attract climbers and adventurers alike. From elevations up to 1,800 meters, the slopes are covered with cedar, pine, larch, fir, and birch trees. Above the tree line (2,400 to 3,000 meters), alpine meadows and steppes dominate the terrain.
