The city of Anyang in the northern province has a long history. In its western suburb Xiaotun lie the ruins of the capital of the Shang Dynasty (ca. 1700 - ca. 1100 BC), where a large number of oracle inscriptions were found. There is a museum at the site. They are considered the origin of the Chinese written language and were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006.
