The area of the Changbai Mountains is the largest nature reserve in China, stretching 250 kilometers along the border with Korea. It has also been included in UNESCO's international conservation program. One of the peaks is the 2,155-meter-high Baitoushan White Head Mountain, an extinct volcano.
At the summit of Baitoushan, there is a very beautiful crater lake called Heaven Lake (Tian Chi). The lake has a shoreline of 12 to 14 kilometers and is up to 384 meters deep. Despite being fed by two hot springs, it is one of the coldest lakes in the world due to its altitude. The Changbai Mountains are also home to a large number of rare species, including bears, Siberian tigers, and Amur leopards.
Even during the summer months, the mountain is a popular destination. At the foot of Baitoushan, visitors can enjoy a very beautiful waterfall and hot springs for bathing. At the edge of this natural wonder, a hiking trail leads up to the mountain. The roads to Baitoushan are well-developed, making the area accessible both in summer and winter.
