The picturesque island of Gulangyu is located off the southeastern coast of China, just outside the gates of Xiamen. The island is famous for its idyllic natural landscape and numerous villas, waterfront promenades, streets, and alleys built in colonial style.
After the Opium War in the 1840s, the British and other Europeans established their foreign consulates and villas here. Many of these buildings are still in excellent condition and provide visitors with an exciting glimpse into the historical past of this region. Particularly noteworthy are the former European consulates and churches, as well as the Shuzhuang Garden and the viewpoint at Sunlight Rock, the highest point on the island. Since only electric vehicles are allowed on the island, exploration here is free from noise and pollution.
In the small historic town center of the island, tourists can find cafes, restaurants, and various small shops. Visitors can reach the island by ferry in just five minutes from the nearby coastal city of Xiamen.
