The city of Hotan is located in the southern part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. This area is primarily known for the ancient kingdom of Hotan, a Buddhist kingdom on the Silk Road that existed from the 1st to the 10th centuries AD. Today, the city is predominantly Muslim. Hotan is also ideal for excursions into the Taklamakan Desert.
