Kaifeng in central China is a city steeped in ancient culture and was once the capital of the Chinese empire. Today, it is one of the seven ancient capitals of China.
Located in the eastern part of Henan province, Kaifeng was a global metropolis during its heyday. Situated along the lower reaches of the Yellow River, the city has endured six major floods throughout its history, leading to its reconstruction multiple times. As a result, Kaifeng features buildings from various historical epochs.
At the city center lies Kaifengfu, the administrative complex of the city. This vast compound resembles a separate city within the city. The original administrative complex from the Northern Song Dynasty was destroyed by wars and natural disasters. In order to provide insight into the city's history, the old complex was reconstructed at its original site in 2003.
