Founded in the year 68, it is China's oldest Buddhist monastery. History states that Chinese monks were sent by the emperor to India to study the teachings of Buddha. They returned carrying Buddhist scriptures on the backs of two white horses, hence the name of the temple, which served as a repository for these scriptures and the dissemination of the teachings. At the entrance of the monastery stand two white horses made out of stone.
