The railway line in the People's Republic of China, known in the West as the Qinghai-Tibet Railway or Tibet Railway due to its destination, connects Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, with Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. The total length of the railway is 1,956 km, comprising two sections: Xining to Golmud (814 km, operational since 1984) and Golmud to Lhasa (1,142 km, operational since 2006). With a summit at 5,072 meters above sea level, it is the highest railway line in the world. Along its route are also the world's highest railway station (Tanggula, 5,068 m) and the highest railway tunnel (4,905 m). Approximately 960 km of the section from Golmud to Lhasa is at altitudes exceeding 4,000 meters. The section inaugurated in 2006 starts from Golmud in Qinghai Province, and the journey to Lhasa takes about twelve hours. From Beijing, the train requires 48 hours.
