In the Yunnan Province, deep in the southwest of China, rice farmers have shaped one of the most extraordinary cultural landscapes on earth. For over a millennium, the Hani, one of the 25 minorities in the region, have reclaimed land from the mountains for their rice terraces, implementing a sophisticated irrigation system up to a height of 1,500 meters.
This technical feat has created one of the most breathtaking landscape architectures: huge, fantastically bizarre sculptures made of earth and water. The terraces are also called "Ladders to Heaven" by the Hani.
