Shaoshan is the birthplace of Mao Zedong and a county-level city that belongs to the administrative area of the prefecture-level city of Xiangtan in Hunan Province, China. During the Cultural Revolution, the town was the destination for millions of Red Guards, but the number of visitors has since rapidly declined. Shaoshan has about 100,000 inhabitants (as of the end of 2003) on an area of 210.38 square kilometers.
