The 60-kilometer-long Shennong River flows into the Yangtze River near the city of Badong. In some shallow parts of the river, traditional boats are pulled along by ropes, following ancient practices. The people living along the Shennong River belong to the Tujia, an ethnic minority in China.
The Tujia are very cheerful people who sing and dance a lot. In the Longxia Gorge, one can see small caves in the rock face, where 2,000-year-old coffins were found. These coffins belonged to the Ba people, who buried their dead in hollowed-out tree trunks placed in rock niches high above the river. To this day, it remains a mystery how the Ba managed to transport the tree trunks to such locations.
