The lake is located 15 kilometers southeast of the city of Changchun. The artificial lake was created in the late 1940s as part of the Fengman Hydropower Plant built at that time. The lake, with its islands and the majestic mountains featuring towering peaks and lush forests in the background, forms a picturesque scene. From a distance, the lake looks like a blue diamond.
The forests on the mountain slopes around Songhua Lake are a paradise for wildlife and numerous birds. Additionally, medicinal herbs typical of Northeast China thrive here. In winter, the mountains and the lake itself become a vast winter sports area, making it an ideal recreational spot for athletes.
