The Wudang Mountains stretch for 400 kilometers and are located in the northwest of Hubei Province. According to legend, this mountain range is the birthplace of Zhen Wu, who ascended to heaven after years of meditation, revered by Taoists as the Great Emperor. Therefore, many Taoists over time sought out the Wudang Mountains for meditation. During the Tang Dynasty, the Taoist temple Wulong was built, followed by many other Taoist sacred buildings. Until the Ming Dynasty, Wudang was considered the Taoist center nationwide.
Wudang has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994.
