Tar Monastery (Kumbum Monastery)

The Tar Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery from the Ming Dynasty era. It is located approximately 25 kilometers southwest of the urban area of Xining (1560). It is considered one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, as the founder Tsong Khapa is believed to have been born here. The monastery buildings are constructed on the mountainside and, at its peak, covered an area of 660,000 square meters with more than 800 rooms. The entire complex appears compact and shines brightly in vibrant colors.
