In 2011, the longest sea bridge in the world was opened in Shandong: spanning 42 kilometers across the Yellow Sea in eastern China, the Qingdao Haiwan Bridge utilized 450,000 tons of steel, 2.3 million cubic meters of concrete, and cost over one billion euros to construct. The bridge connects the port city of Qingdao with Huangdao Island and Qingdao Liuting Airport, reducing the driving distance between the city and the island by 30 kilometers and approximately 20 minutes.
