The Northern Tomb is located north of the old city of Shenyang in the largest park of the city. Inside the tomb lie Emperor Huang Taiji of the Qing dynasty and Empress Xiao Duan Wen. It was built in 1643 following the principles of the Ming tombs, featuring a three-part layout. Particularly noteworthy are the many pine trees planted everywhere, some of which are over 300 years old. Through the Dahong Gate, one reaches the Sacred Way adorned with six stone animals. Next are the Long En Gate and the Long En Palace, leading finally to the burial mound. Access to the mausoleum itself is not public. For those seeking something truly extraordinary, a visit to the service rooms located in front of the Dahong Gate is a must. Here lies the only preserved imperial toilet in China, built for an inspection visit by Emperor Kangxi.
