Yin Xu are the remnants of the city of Yin, the later capital of the Shang Dynasty. The ruins are located on both sides of the Huan River in present-day Anyang City, northern Henan Province. The ruins date back to the 14th-11th centuries BCE. In the early 20th century, scientists discovered oracle bones at the site, which bear some of the earliest known forms of Chinese characters, considered precursors to modern Chinese writing.
In 1976, archaeologists discovered the intact tomb of Fu Hao (wife of Shang King Wu Ding) 100 meters north of Xiao Tun Village in Anyang. The tomb contained a total of 1928 artifacts, including 468 bronze vessels, 755 jade objects, and nearly 7000 cowrie shells.
In 2006, UNESCO inscribed Yin Xu on the World Heritage List.
