anhui

Anhui Province is located just a few hours west of Shanghai by car and approximately 2 hours south of Beijing by flight. Despite being in eastern China, Anhui does not have direct access to the sea.

Anhui remains predominantly rural with a population of 59,860,000 inhabitants. It is also the most densely populated province in China, with 429 people per square kilometer.

Anhui is renowned for its beautiful landscapes and mountains, such as Huangshan Mountain (Yellow Mountain).

The province offers a variety of fascinating and impressive tourist destinations, making it one of the most visited provinces in China.

The most famous and popular tourist destinations in Anhui are the mountains in the southern part of the province. Huangshan, known for its hot springs, rain-washed gorges, and mysterious pathways and bridges, is especially famous for its steep, uniquely shaped cliffs adorned with pine trees growing directly from the rocks.

Additionally, UNESCO has designated the towns of Xidi and Hongcun as World Heritage Sites. They are located approximately 60 kilometers from Tunxi.

Capital Hefei

Hefei (Chinese: 合肥市 Héféi Shì) is the capital city of Anhui province in China. The administrative area of this prefecture-level city covers an area of 6,911 square kilometers and had approximately 9,4 million inhabitants by the end of 2020.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Hefei was known as Luzhou (庐州). Several battles, such as the Second Battle of Hefei in 217 AD, are named after the city. Today, Hefei serves as a transportation hub and industrial city, with industries including automobile manufacturing, textiles, steel, and chemicals.

The city is home to nearly a dozen universities and similar institutions of higher learning, making it one of the four centers of higher education supported by the Chinese government. Among Hefei's most renowned universities are the University of Science and Technology of China and Anhui University, both of which are part of the national elite and participate in the government's 211 Project aimed at establishing approximately 100 world-class universities through special funding and support.
