Macao is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, located approximately 50 kilometers west of Hong Kong. In 1999, Macao was placed under Chinese sovereignty again. Due to its rich history, Macao is abundant with attractions. The main sources of income are tourism and gambling. Macao is often referred to as the Monte Carlo or Las Vegas of the East. Unlike neighboring Hong Kong, gambling is legal in Macao, attracting numerous visitors.
Macao is situated in the estuary of the Pearl River. The area of the current Special Administrative Region originally consisted of three islands. Through land reclamation, the islands of Taipa and Coloane have been connected, and Macao has been linked to the mainland.
Macau International Airport on Taipa Island is a modern regional airport. While there are no direct flights from Europe, there are good flight connections within Asia. The flight schedule includes daily flights to China and other Asian countries such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Singapore, and Taipei.
Additionally, there are long-distance buses to Guangzhou and other regional cities, as well as a train connection to Macau.
The fastest and easiest way to travel from Germany to Macau is via Hong Kong Airport. Upon arrival at Hong Kong International Airport, passengers can take a direct ferry to Macau without needing to enter Hong Kong. Passengers remain in the transit area and proceed directly to the high-speed ferry to Macau.
It's convenient that luggage can be checked through to the Macau ferry terminal. Passengers only need to show their baggage claim ticket at the transfer counter in Hong Kong. The ferry ride takes approximately 45 minutes, and hydrofoil boats operate nine times daily between Hong Kong Airport and the Macau ferry terminal.
For those already in Hong Kong, high-speed ferries to Macau depart every 15 minutes. The red hydrofoil boats operated by Turbojet or Turbo Ferry take about an hour to reach Macau. Turbojet ferries depart from the Shun Tak Centre on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.
