Located in the northern part of Jiangxi Province, Poyang Lake is connected to the Yangtze River to the north. With an area of 2,933 square kilometers, it is the largest freshwater lake in China.
Poyang Lake has a vast water surface and is rich in small fish. It has a humid climate, making it an ideal habitat for many species of rare birds that winter there, such as the Siberian Crane, Swan, and White-necked Crane. A viewing platform has been built by the lake for observing migratory birds more closely.
The water level of Poyang Lake fluctuates by up to 20 meters throughout the year, varying between the dry season and the monsoon. During heavy monsoon rains, it serves as a natural reservoir, storing peak floodwaters from its tributaries and thereby delaying the flow to the Yangtze River, which helps mitigate more extreme flooding downstream.
