Site of 'Beijing Man' in Zhoukoudian

The site of 'Peking Man' is located on Longgu Hill (Hill of Dragon Bones) west of Zhoukoudian village, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Beijing city. 'Peking Man' lived approximately 250,000 to 600,000 years ago in limestone caves on Longgu Hill. Numerous cultural artifacts and historical relics have also been found there.

In the 1960s, the area around Zhoukoudian was listed as a significant cultural relic by the Chinese State Council. In 1987, 'Peking Man' was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The justification stated that the site not only serves as a memorial for the prehistoric history of Asia but also represents the process of evolution.
