On the north bank of the river stands the Wanghailou Church ("Cathedral of Notre Dame des Victoires"). It was built in 1904 and is already the third church at this location - the first was destroyed one year after its construction during the massacre of 1870, and the second burned down in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion. The plain cathedral with its dark stones and strict lines stands in stark contrast to the Catholic Church further south.
