Jiangxi is a landlocked province located in southeastern China. Its most important river is the 751-kilometer-long Gan River, which has given the province its abbreviation. The Gan River flows from south to north, eventually emptying into Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake, which in turn drains into the Yangtze River, touching Jiangxi only at its northern border.

Putonghua, the standard language of the People's Republic of China, is understood almost everywhere. In the southern regions, there are areas inhabited by Hakka people who speak their own language. In the northern border areas, dialects such as Hui and Wu are spoken.
